Lenovo ThinkPad T460 Repair
This page sets out the repairs, upgrades and data recovery we carry out on the Lenovo ThinkPad T460, with notes on what tends to go wrong and what can and cannot be upgraded. It is a 14-inch laptop from 2016, identified by machine types 20FM, 20FN. Both the drive and, on most configurations, the memory can be upgraded, which makes it a good candidate for a refresh.

Lenovo ThinkPad T460 repairs and upgrades
Screen replacement
A broken 14-inch screen is replaced with a panel of the same resolution and finish. We check the display cable while the lid is open.

Keyboard and trackpad repair
The keyboard is a separate part on most ThinkPads and is replaced without disturbing the rest of the machine. Trackpad and TrackPoint buttons are replaced the same way.
Charging port and power repair
A charger that only works at a certain angle means a worn charging socket. We replace it and test the charging circuit behind it.
SSD and storage upgrade
The Lenovo ThinkPad T460 uses a 2.5-inch SATA drive. Replacing a hard drive with an SSD is the biggest speed improvement available for a machine of this age.

Memory upgrade
Most configurations of the Lenovo ThinkPad T460 have SODIMM memory slots, so memory can be increased. We check what is fitted and the maximum the board supports.
Windows repair and reinstall
This model does not meet Microsoft's Windows 11 requirements, and Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025. We can advise on the realistic options, including a lightweight Linux or ChromeOS Flex installation.
Battery replacement
The battery is internal and held by screws. We fit a new one, then calibrate and test it under load. At this age, short runtime and sudden shutdowns usually point to a worn battery and not a board fault.

We also carry out motherboard repair, liquid damage repair, overheating and fan repair, hinge and casing repair, virus removal on the Lenovo ThinkPad T460, along with USB, HDMI and audio port repair, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth card replacement, webcam and speaker faults, BIOS password removal with proof of ownership and data transfer to a new machine.
What we see on the bench
- ThinkPad keyboards, batteries and SSDs are accessible and well supported with parts, which makes most repairs economical.
- From the T480s onward many T-series models have one soldered memory module and one free slot.
- On the T480 and T580, USB-C and Thunderbolt charging failures are a known fault, often linked to out-of-date Thunderbolt firmware.
- A forgotten supervisor password is stored in a security chip and cannot be reset from software.
Data recovery from the Lenovo ThinkPad T460
The Lenovo ThinkPad T460 has a 2.5-inch drive that we remove and image on our own equipment. If the drive is clicking or was dropped, stop powering it on: each attempt can do more damage.

Where the Lenovo ThinkPad T460 sits in the range
Its nearest relatives in the Lenovo ThinkPad T Series range are the older Lenovo ThinkPad T450 (2015) and the newer Lenovo ThinkPad T470 (2017). Storage differs too: 2.5-inch SATA drive on the Lenovo ThinkPad T460, M.2 SSD, replaceable on the Lenovo ThinkPad T470.
Questions
Can the SSD or memory in the Lenovo ThinkPad T460 be upgraded?
The 2.5-inch drive can be replaced with an SSD. Memory is in slots on most configurations and can be increased.
My Lenovo ThinkPad T460 will not turn on. Is my data lost?
Usually not. The drive is separate from the fault in most cases, and we can remove it and copy your files even if the machine itself is not worth repairing.
Can the Lenovo ThinkPad T460 run Windows 11?
Not officially. It does not meet Microsoft's processor and security requirements.
How do I get my Lenovo ThinkPad T460 to you?
